Lamphun ( Formerly Hariphunchai) is amongst the oldest cities in Thailand and predates Chiangmai by several centuries. The chronicles tell how some hermits wished to establish a city and invited Queen Chamadevi from Lopburi to be the first ruler.
Visit Wat Phra That Hariphunchai which has two beautiful old Chedis in the Sri Lanka style. The main Viharn, a large structure containing the Phra Chao Thongtip Buddha and several smaller images, was rebuilt in 1925. Afterward to Wat Chamadevi, dating back at least to the 10th century. The pagoda has a square shape like the revered Bodhgaya in India. Standing Buddha images gesturing the giving of blessings are situated in the niches on each receding tier. Legend has it that Prince Anantayot and Prince Mahantayot .sons of the warrior queen , ordered the pagada to house their mother’s ashes. Later the top of the pagoda was broken and lost. Another stop is Hariphunchai National Museum, contains a good display that includes some excellent examples of Hariphunchai art. (closed on Monday and Tuesday)
